Educational objectives The course aims at providing methods and tools for developing a simple architectural design through the control of compositional techniques in relation to the site and increasing knowledge of settlement systems.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of architectural drawing and history.
Teaching methods The educational activity includes lectures, guided exercises, revisions, and moments sharing the various work steps of students. Both individual and collective revisions are expected, with the participation of all the students in the course.
The course will be supplemented by specialization seminars aimed at delving deeper into the various design issues and elaborating a complete project, from the urban planimetry to the study of space.
Other information None
Learning verification modality The evaluation of the practical individual and/or group exercises, which are mandatory to take the exam, comes before the final exam, which consists of an oral test dedicated to the presentation of the final project and the process.
Extended program The course is organized into various activities: lectures, some of which are by invited professors; extempore exercises; in-situ exercises (outside of the classroom); laboratorial activities in the classroom; collective corrections and revisions. In order to carry out all these laboratorial activities, students need to have the necessary hand-drawing and model-making equipment.
The course aims to give the students the basic tools for starting and completing a simple design, which represents the main course’s result.

Educational objectives The laboratory aims at providing methods and interpretative-evaluative strategies for developing design skills at different scales through the control of compositional techniques and increasing knowledge of settlement and environmental dynamics in different contexts.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of architectural drawing and history.
Teaching methods The educational activity includes lectures, guided exercises, revisions, and moments sharing the various work steps of students. Both individual and collective revisions are expected, with the participation of all the students of the laboratory.
Lectures will deal with architectural and urban composition, with a specific focus on the compositional processes related to the existing.
Other information None.
Learning verification modality The exam is preceded by the evaluation of the practical individual and/or group exercises, which are mandatory to take the exam. It consists of an oral test dedicated to the presentation of the teaching path carried out during the various exercise activities, referring to the texts suggested, and the theoretical references studied.
Extended program The laboratory is organized into various activities: lectures, some of which are by invited professors; extempore exercises; in-situ exercises (outside of the classroom); laboratorial activities in the classroom; collective corrections and revisions. To carry out all these laboratorial activities, students need to have the right tools for hand-drawing and realizing models.
The laboratory aims to give the students the basic tools for starting a design process in its analytical, interpretive, and compositional aspects. Therefore, the following issues will be addressed: analysis as a design, through the toll of drawing; the generator elements of architecture and city, in particular the relationship between full and empty space; from plan and section (2d) to the idea of space (3d), with the help of models; from references to design.
Each topic will be addressed through conveniently organized lectures, exercises, and collective revisions.
