Educational objectives The primary objective of the course is to provide the student with elementary methods and tools to control the composition and compositional modifications of simple architectural systems with particular attention to the design process in relation to urban and environmental pre-existences. In order to provide the student with the basis for dealing with an architectural design, the knowledge that the course aims to provide covers both traditional and innovative design techniques.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of architecture drawing and architecture history.
Teaching methods The course, aimed at deepening the concept of architectural design necessary for the understanding and transformation of physical space, is articulated in theoretical face-to-face lectures, classroom reviews, individual exercises and a group design exercise, including in-depth seminars.
Other information None.
Learning verification modality The exam, preceded by the evaluation of the individual exercises assigned during the course, consists of an oral test dedicated to the presentation of the design work drafted in the group. These tests are aimed at verifying the level of student knowledge of the topics covered during the course and the ability to comprehend and synthesize them.
Extended program The course aims to provide students with elementary methods and tools to undertake design work, with particular attention to the compositional process in relation to pre-existing architecture. Therefore, the following themes will be addressed: architecture and genius loci; compositional method; urban regeneration; designing with the pre-existing buildings; reuse and extension; parasite architecture; drawing as a tool for design.

Educational objectives The course aims at providing methods and interpretative-evaluative strategies for developing design skills through the control of compositional techniques and increasing knowledge of settlement and environmental dynamics in different contexts, with a focus on the relationship with preexistence.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of architectural drawing.
Teaching methods Lectures will deal with architectural and urban composition, with a specific focus on the compositional processes related to urban, environmental, and territorial preexistence. Lectures will aim at delving deeper into the various design tools and the theoretical and technical knowledge required for understanding and transforming the environment and territory.
The educational activity will conclude with an applied exercise implementing the compositional analysis of a well-known building.
Other information None
Learning verification modality The evaluation of the mandatory individual exercises comes before the exam, which consists of an oral test about the notions learned during the course, the texts suggested, and the theoretical references studied.
Extended program The course aims to give the students the basic tools for starting a design process. Therefore, the following issues will be addressed: architecture and site; drawing as a tool for design; the notion of type in architecture; the plan; the house; the system of relationships between architecture, city, and landscape; building with the preexisting; the compositional analysis.
